Bonzo Dog Star Steps in to Help Cromer Folk Festival

Cromer’s ‘Folk on the Pier’ festival was left with a dilemma last week when they were suddenly informed that ‘The Oldest Swinger in Town’ Fred Wedlock had sadly passed away.  Mr Wedlock was due to perform as part of the Sunday night concert of the festival on the 9th May.  He had become a firm favourite since his appearance at the event a couple of years ago.  With just over two months to go, festival director Scott Butler was left with the major problem of finding a suitable and sympathetic replacement concerning the festival programming.

Legendary musician and funny man Neil Innes has kindly stepped in to take up the post. His work is well known and it includes being a founder member of the Bonzo Dog Band, the Rutles and extensive work with the Monty Python team including a well known appearance as a minstrel in ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’. He also appeared in 1979 in the ‘Secret Policeman’s Ball’ for Amnesty International and had an eighteen part TV series on BBC2 ‘The Innes Book of Records’ from 1970 through to1980. He has recently toured with his show ‘Ego Warriors’ and appeared a the Royal Albert Hall as part of the Monty Python oratorio ‘Not the Messiah - he’s just a very naughty boy’. He is currently touring a new show ‘A People’s Guide to World Domination’

Scott Butler commented that though the situation is very sad for all of us concerning Fred Wedlock, having a performer of Neil’s stature stepping into the breach has really lifted our spirits.
